The Mustang Art Department a reputation of excellence for the study of art and design by providing students with skills and techniques in various media while focusing on basic skills, concepts, and theory.

This nine week elective course provides students with opportunities to develop & use the visual language, build creative critical thinking skills and aesthetic judgments. This course also pursues personal expression through art exploration and production utilizing a variety of media within two and three dimensions. Students experience and appreciate the art of others throughout history and diverse cultures.

This semester elective course provides students with enhanced opportunities to develop & use the visual language, build creative critical thinking skills and aesthetic judgments. This course also pursues personal expression through advanced art exploration and production utilizing a variety of media within two and three dimensions. Students experience and appreciate the art of others throughout history and diverse cultures and will have increased opportunities to display their artwork outside of the classroom setting.

Two and three dimensional art production are included in this course. Basic design drawing, painting, and sculpture techniques will be explored. A concentration on the principles and elements of design, incorporated with art history, will be integrated into various art projects throughout the course.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Art I

This advanced art class expands upon the elements of art and the principles of design with continued exploration of basic art media and techniques, such as drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, ceramics, collage, printmaking and sculpture. This course is designed for the highly motivated art student. This course will consist of more in-depth study of art criticism, aesthetics, and art history. Students will develop an ability to talk about their work and the work of others in classroom critiques. Students are required to bring a sketchbook. Students will also have many opportunities to explore careers in the arts, as well as showcase their artwork in the community.

Students will study and work with basic techniques and materials in art. The elements of drawing will be studied in depth. Students will work in various drawing media using marker, colored pencil, oil pastel, and chalk pastel. Basic painting, printmaking, and sculpture will also be covered. A $40 Art fee required to cover consumable materials used.

AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP work should be at a first-year college level and should reflect a sense of quality, concentration on a particular visual interest or problem, and the need for breadth of experience in the formal, technical and expressive means of the artist. This course is only for students who intend to submit an AP portfolio at the end of the year. A $80 Art fee required to cover consumable materials used, (it can be paid out throughout the year).

This course will build on basic art concepts using sculpture as the primary method for creating art. Various types of sculpture will be addressed including relief and 3D. Materials may include paper, found objects, clay, and wood. A $40 Art fee required to cover consumable materials used.

This course will address, in increasing detail, the techniques and skills taught in Sculpture I. Students will be required to think with increasing independence and creativity while engaging in challenging sculpture techniques. Students must be self-motivated and truly interested in Art. Materials may include found objects, clay, wood, mosaic, plaster, and wire.This course may be used as a pathway to Advanced Placement Art. A $40 Art fee required to cover consumable materials used.

This course will build on basic ceramic hand-building skills using clay as the primary method for creating art. Various hand building skills will be covered including pinch pot, coil building, slab, and a variety of surface textures and carving techniques. Students will explore a variety of surface treatments such as glazing, underglazing, acrylic painting and watercolor painting. This course may also build into throwing on the wheel.

Art Show Opportunities for Mustang Visual Arts Students

Mustang Visual Arts students have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a variety of respected local, state, and university-affiliated art exhibitions. Participation in these events enriches student learning, encourages creativity, and helps develop key life skills through the arts.

Local and Statewide Opportunities:
-Western Days Art Show (Mustang)
     A community-focused event celebrating Mustang's history and the arts. Open to student and     
     community artists, this show provides a supportive venue for young artists to display their
     work.

Oklahoma Student Art Exhibition (OSAE) – State Fair Art Show
-Open to all Oklahoma public and private school students, grades Pre-K-12.
     Artwork is juried and displayed during the Oklahoma State Fair in September.
     Free entry, with additional awards and recognitions for students and teachers1.
     Includes accessible regional take-in sites to encourage participation across the state.

Oklahoma Art Education Association (OAEA) Shows:
-Young People’s Art Exhibit: Open to PreK-12 students, held at Prairie Arts Center in Stillwater.
  Selected works represent Oklahoma at national events.

-Young Talent in Oklahoma (YTIO): For high school artists, juried competition culminating in an
  exhibit at the OU Lightwell Gallery. Senior portfolios and individual works both accepted.
  Recognized as a premier state art show for high school students.

-Youth Arts Day at the Capitol: Selected works from students across Oklahoma are displayed at the
  State Capitol, celebrating youth contributions to the arts.


Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education (OAAE):
-Bookmark Contest: Inspires creative literacy through art by having students design bookmarks
  based on an annual theme.

Other OAAE events and exhibitions frequently highlight student creations and advocate for arts education.

University-Sponsored Opportunities:
-University of Oklahoma (OU)
     Young Talent in Oklahoma (YTIO) exhibit is hosted annually at OU’s Lightwell Gallery.
     Additional youth-focused events and summer academies offer presentation and recognition       
     opportunities for aspiring artists.
-Oklahoma State University (OSU)
     Orange Wall Art Gallery: Year-round student showcases in the Student Union, including an
     annual juried student art contest with scholarship awards.
-University of Central Oklahoma (UCO)
     Melton Gallery: Features rotating exhibitions, with opportunities for K-12 and high school
     students to participate in competitions, workshops, and educational outreach.
-University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO)
     USAO frequently hosts high school art days and state-level art contests that Mustang students
     are eligible to enter.


These art shows and exhibitions foster community engagement and provide valuable public recognition for Mustang students’ artistic achievements, furthering personal growth and the impact of arts education.
