The Mustang Theatre Department is devoted to educating students on the skills and practices of “all things” theatre. Our goal is to celebrate every student and provide confidence and competence in life through the artform.

Career Pathways A/V/L

This course introduces the student to basic stage terminology, improvisation, character building, and fundamentals of acting while incorporating artistic disciplines, such as memorizing scripts and blocking, being a responsible and cooperative teammate, and incorporating basic performance principles. Emphasis on team-building, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and presentation skills. Great confidence booster and skill-set confidence booster for ANYONE, regardless of professional pursuits.

This is a performance-based, foundation-building class. Students will progress from group presentations to individual performances while learning terminology. Coursework may involve pantomime, warm-ups, scenes, monologues, script writing, character analysis, improvisation, stage presentation techniques, memorizing lines, and applying audience etiquette. Participation in all performances is required. Emphasis on team-building, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, presentation skills, and audience etiquette. Great confidence and skill-set booster for ANYONE, regardless of professional pursuits. Participation in the Evening Showcase for parents/friends is encouraged.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

INTERMEDIATE

Beginning Theatre

This is a hands-on, performance-based class building upon the concepts and practices of Beginning Theatre. Students will participate in script writing, stage design, monologues, scenes, character analysis, and limited technical theatre. Additionally, students will perform scenes for a live audience and continue to develop improvisational skills, activities, and focus activities for performers. Participation in all performances is required. Participation in the Evening Showcase for parents/friends encouraged.

Intermediate Theatre

This course will apply all aspects of Beginning and Intermediate Theatre by spending 6-7 weeks producing a play. Memorization is expected, and participation in all performances is required. (This play will be performed in matinee for the student body in addition to an open evening performance.) The play will allow the students to incorporate their knowledge in varied aspects of technical theatre, publicity/advertisement, and performing art skills. There will also be an introduction into speech and competitive theatre with the possibilities of attending OSSAA Novice competitions in collaboration with the high school Theatre students.

This year-long, performance-based course engages students in the foundations of theatre as an art form. Students, live or filmed, perform in class presentations including: oral interpretation, monologues, scenes, storytelling, improvisation, mime, pantomime, commercials, and a mandatory class production. Students study Greek, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance & Elizabethan theatre history and are also introduced to stagecraft as they create makeup, costume and set designs. OSSAA Competitive Acting Tournaments are encouraged while participation in a class play is mandatory. A 16 GB SD card is required.

This year-long, performance-based course builds on the background established in Theatre I, adding the exploration of classical and contemporary production styles and playwriting as well as the study of acting styles/theories, Shakespeare and Modern playwrights. Students read and analyze plays, write critiques and reviews, create a resume, create and implement makeup designs and construct/design a flat. Possible Shakespeare and stage combat workshops. Students are required to purchase a $60-65 theatrical makeup kit for a unit on stage makeup. Participation in one OSSAA Competitive Acting Tournament as well as participation in a class play is required. A 16 GB SD card is required.

This year-long advanced performance-based course builds on the background established in Theatre I and II. Students are required to participate in scenes, monologues, playwriting, improvisation, production design, tournaments, theatre management (in senior-directed one acts), and a class production, which will require some outside class time for a few rehearsals & performances. Theatre III students specifically study American Drama, Shakespeare, and auditioning techniques and create an acting resume or design portfolio. Possible stage combat and “auditioning for camera” (film & TV) workshops. Participation in 2 OSSAA Competitive Acting Tournaments, participation in the class play, a 16 GB SD card, and participation in the Senior Directed One Acts are all required.

This year-long course is the final theatrical course, building upon all previous theatre classes, adding the element of directing (Senior-directed one acts). Students are required to participate in scenes, monologues, playwriting, improvisation, production design, tournaments, and a class production, which will require some outside class time for a few rehearsals & performances. Theatre IV students specifically study World Theatre, Shakespeare & audition techniques and create an acting resume or design portfolio. Possible stage combat and “auditioning for camera” (film & TV) workshops. Participation in 2 OSSAA Competitive ActingTournaments, participation in the class play, a 16 GB SD card, and participation in the Senior Directed One Acts are all required.

This course is designed to provide students a basic understanding of the tools, materials, methods, terminology, and practice of stagecraft & technical theater. The course introduces students to the art and craft of technical theatre and theatre production, as well as beginning design and theory. The course focuses on scenery & properties of construction, theatrical painting, lighting & sound operation and program participation. Stagecraft admission requires instructor approval, and advancement requires an application process.

This course is an introduction to the basic theory and practice of stage audio/lighting. Students will explore and apply elements of design (color, texture, intensity, line, composition) as they relate to lighting for live performance, learning the basic tools of the lighting from actual lighting instruments to creating and timing of lighting cues. Theory and practice of sound design (ambience, Foley sounds, dialogue, audio effects, voice over) for live theatre is also explored. Intensive practical application of principles in technical theatre are explored through running a crew for a live production.

Theatre Technologies I

Theatre Technologies II

This course is an intensive practical application of principles in technical theatre production for lighting and sound. Course activities include the application of: a) theory and practice of stage lighting, b) instruments and control systems employed in lighting the stage, c) advanced techniques and practice in technical drafting as applied to theatrical scenic construction, d) improved design aesthetic and understanding of modern technology that is commonly used in the theatre through hands-on exploration of lighting consoles, and e) automated and LED fixtures that will sharpen design skills. Students will have production opportunities in sound design and audio engineering, overseeing the planning and execution of an actual production.

This course is designed for the student who desires a career in AVL Design or a comparable production pathway. By the end of this course, students will have connections to enter the workforce or a college program of choice. Professional membership and attendance at USITT conference will expand students’ knowledge to prepare them for new industry innovations. Students enrolled in this course will assist the MPAC Technical Director with performances and events held in the PAC.
